Cold snap to start the weekend and then Spring Is On The Way!!!

Tonight and tomorrow will feature some of the coldest weather that we have seen all winter with a changeover to milder weather to finish off the weekend.

Classic Manitoba Coldsnap Continues

For the night tonight expect the coldest of the winter weather to stick around, temperatures of -30C and windchill values near -40 celcius will make for a very cold night and start to your saturday as a arctic airmass continues to sit over the area. Exposed skin can freeze in 10 minutes so please be very careful and bundle up before going outside. As we go into our day Saturday it may still feel cold with windchills near -40C at times as the arctic airmass leaves the province along with those winter southerlies gusting to 40km/h at times. Our temperatures will warm through the day. Just make sure that if you really like the cold weather to get out and enjoy it, this may be the last coldsnap until December of 2016. Really though I think there are some who just enjoy the fresh and crisp cold air, I personally don't.

Warm Front Hero Transitions Us Into Warmer Weather :-)

A warm front will move into the area bumping up our temperatures to about -15C or so by the end of the day Saturday. Snow and local blowing snow will develop overnight before leading to cloudcover with our temperatures around -12C by Sunday Morning. Snowfall Amounts should total about 2 to 4cm, elsewhere a dusting along the MB,SK Border. As depicted in the graphic above warmer air will move in from the west pushing the colder temperatures out east on Sunday, as a result Sunday will be a much more comfortable day as high temperatures rise to about -5C with some flurries occuring. The night on Sunday will be warmer with a low of about -9C compared to previous nights where our lows were in the minus 20's and minus 30's.

Warm Weather To Continue, One Minor Coldsnap Left Though

As indicated on the latest CFSV2 runs our temperatures will flip flop once again, but not for long before we see a pattern transition into warmer weather. Heading into next week we will see a bit more variability in the temperatures as we start off with warm temperatures on Monday. A minor cold shot (-13 to -18C) during the middle of the week (Tuesday and Wednesday) will make for a bit of a inconveince, before we warm back up and continue to stay warm.

The polar vortex that has stayed over our area for the past week will not make a return, as warmer pacific air starts flooding in from the ridging out west and the westerlies that will take over. That means we can confidently say we are transitioning into a warmer pattern that will stay with us as we go into Spring. The latest look at various model runs from tropicaltidbits.com suggests our temperatures will vary from between -12C and +2C over the coming weeks making our average close to around -5C.
